UV Laser Processing of MicroLED´s

Displays are getting larger – and smaller! Lasers are a key enabling manufacturing technology for whatever display type, from miniature wearable AR/VR displays to high resolution, flexible displays for mobile devices, from larger, next generation OLED IT panels to even the biggest screens for TVs and signage. The market adoption strongly depends on the display cost. Shrinking MicroLED sizes and high throughput and yield are the key to success. Laser Lift-Off, thes release of III-V based MicroLED´s from the growth wafer, and laser-based mass transfer are two mandatory process steps of the MicroLED process chain. A UV laser mask-based high precision imaging system will be used, which is capable to process GaN based MicroLED´s down to a few microns. A flexible system concept will be presented that can cover both LLO and selective mass transfer. It has the capability to process MicroLED displays for AR as well as larger formats such as tiles for combination to large MicroLED TV´s.

Since their invention, ultrafast lasers have penetrated a large number of fields. Starting with the scientific field, UF lasers have, during the first decade of the 21st century, started to penetrate the industrial and medical applications. Since these first industrial applications, the average power of ultrashort pulse lasers has continued to grow and reached a power of more than 1000W in 2023. In his presentation, Vincent Rouffiange will present the applications that have driven the technological development of these new generation high power UF lasers.

Dr. Arnold Mayer is president and founder of Optech Consulting, a consultancy specializing in the laser and photonics industry. Prior to founding Optech Consulting in 1992 Arnold held positions in business development, industrial R&D, and management consulting. He received his degree in physics from the University of Stuttgart, Germany, and his PhD at the Max Planck Institute for Solid State Research in Stuttgart.

Dr. Jianwu Ding is currently the founder and the CEO of GW LaserTech. With a Ph.D in Electrical Engineering from the Pennsylvania State University, Dr. Ding has been a laser veteran for about two decades with numerous peer-reviewed articles, technical presentations, invention patents and prestigious awards. before Founding GW LaserTech, he has served at Akamai Physics, Nufern (now a division of Coherent), Convergent Photonics (a division of Prima Industries).
